Foundations of Music Theory

The elements of music and how we read them

Foundations of Music Theory

Learning Objectives

At the end of the lesson, learners will be able to: (1) identify the basic elements of music — pitch, rhythm, dynamics, timbre, and form; (2) read notes on the treble and bass staves; (3) explain how these elements work together in a short score.

Lesson Discussion

We begin with the raw materials of music: sound, silence, and time. Learners explore how a single pitch becomes melody, how duration becomes rhythm, and how composers use these building blocks to create expression. The lesson closes with a guided listening activity where students identify each element in a familiar song.
