Lecture 02

The Staff, Clefs, and Note Values

Reading music before playing it

The Staff, Clefs, and Note Values

Learning Objectives

At the end of the lesson, learners will be able to: (1) name the lines and spaces of the treble and bass staves; (2) identify the four common clefs and explain who reads each one; (3) write and recognise whole, half, quarter, and eighth note values.

Lesson Discussion

Before a learner plays a single note, they need to know where that note lives on the page. This lesson builds the map: five lines, four spaces, and the clefs that tell us which register we are reading. Learners practise drawing clefs, naming notes from flashcards, and clapping note values as a class. The lesson ends with a short reading exercise sung on a single syllable so that reading and hearing stay connected.
