Intervals and Their Qualities

Measuring distance between notes

Intervals and Their Qualities

Learning Objectives

At the end of the lesson, learners will be able to: (1) name intervals by number and quality; (2) sing and identify perfect fifths, major thirds, and minor thirds by ear; (3) use intervals to check their own intonation.

Lesson Discussion

Intervals are the distance between two notes — the difference between a step that feels easy and a leap that feels heroic. Learners measure intervals on the staff, then sing them back using familiar song openings as anchors. We spend time on the perfect fifth because it is the tuning foundation for choirs and strings. The lesson closes with an interval-recognition game in pairs, which doubles as a quick assessment.
