Harmonic Progression Basics

How chords move and resolve

Harmonic Progression Basics

Learning Objectives

At the end of the lesson, learners will be able to: (1) explain the function of I, IV, V, and vi in a key; (2) recognise a I–IV–V–I progression by ear; (3) harmonise a simple eight-bar melody with primary chords.

Lesson Discussion

Most songs a learner will meet are built from four chords. This lesson shows how I, IV, and V pull the ear forward and home again, and why vi adds a touch of colour. Learners listen to three familiar songs and label the progression, then harmonise a simple melody of their own. The aim is confidence: by the end, every learner should be able to accompany a class song with three chords.
