Ear Training: Pitch & Intervals

Training the listening ear

Ear Training: Pitch & Intervals

Learning Objectives

At the end of the lesson, learners will be able to: (1) match a pitch played on the piano with their voice; (2) identify whether a second pitch is higher or lower, and by how much; (3) sing a short melodic pattern back after one hearing.

Lesson Discussion

Ear training is a daily habit, not a special talent. We begin with warm-up patterns that learners echo, then move to higher/lower discrimination using two-note examples. Learners take turns at the piano playing patterns for the class to answer. Short, frequent practice matters more than long sessions, so the lesson ends with a five-minute routine learners can repeat at home.
