Lecture 11

Sight-Singing and Solfège

Reading music with the voice

Sight-Singing and Solfège

Learning Objectives

At the end of the lesson, learners will be able to: (1) sing a major scale using solfège syllables and hand signs; (2) sight-sing a four-bar melody in treble clef; (3) explain how solfège supports reading in a choir rehearsal.

Lesson Discussion

Sight-singing turns notation into sound without an instrument. Learners warm up with solfège hand signs, then read short four-bar melodies, first together and then individually. We talk about why solfège helps a choir learn faster — everyone agrees on the notes before the words arrive. The lesson ends with a paired sight-reading check so each learner knows exactly what to practise.
