Lecture 12
Introduction to Counterpoint
Two lines, one conversation

Learning Objectives
At the end of the lesson, learners will be able to: (1) explain the difference between parallel, similar, and contrary motion; (2) write a two-voice exercise in first species counterpoint; (3) evaluate whether two lines sound independent or doubled.
Lesson Discussion
Counterpoint is a conversation: two voices that move with and against each other. Learners start by listening to a duet and describing what each line is doing, then write a first-species exercise over a given cantus firmus. Rule-following comes second to listening — if the two lines sound like one thick line, something needs to change. The lesson ends with learners performing each other's exercises on two instruments.
