Lecture 13
Form and Analysis in Music
Seeing the architecture

Learning Objectives
At the end of the lesson, learners will be able to: (1) identify binary, ternary, rondo, and theme-and-variations form; (2) map the sections of a short piece while listening; (3) explain how form helps a listener remember music.
Lesson Discussion
Form is the architecture a listener feels without seeing. Learners map a short piece section by section while it plays, then compare their maps with a partner's. We move quickly from simple binary and ternary to rondo and variations, always by listening first and labelling second. The lesson closes with a one-minute piece that learners analyse from memory, which shows how much structure the ear already tracks.
