The Instruments of the Orchestra

Families, timbres, and roles

The Instruments of the Orchestra

Learning Objectives

At the end of the lesson, learners will be able to: (1) name the four orchestral families and their main instruments; (2) describe how each family produces sound; (3) identify a family by ear in short excerpts.

Lesson Discussion

An orchestra is four ways of making sound: strings, woodwinds, brass, and percussion. Learners see and hear each family in turn, guessing the family before the name is revealed. We discuss how composers choose a family to set a mood — a solo oboe for longing, low brass for weight. The lesson ends with a listening quiz in which learners identify families, not instruments, so the skill is accessible to everyone.
