Lecture 16
Choral Conducting Fundamentals
Gesture, breath, and ensemble

Learning Objectives
At the end of the lesson, learners will be able to: (1) give a clear preparatory beat, downbeat, and cutoff; (2) use gesture to control dynamics and entrances; (3) rehearse a short passage using gesture instead of words.
Lesson Discussion
Conducting is communication with the hands before the voice. Learners practise the basic beat patterns in front of a mirror, then conduct each other in a simple round. We emphasise preparation: a clear breath and upbeat solves most ensemble problems before they happen. The lesson ends with a silent rehearsal — learners may only use gesture, which quickly reveals how clear their conducting really is.
