Lecture 20

Music in the 20th Century

New rules, new sounds

Music in the 20th Century

Learning Objectives

At the end of the lesson, learners will be able to: (1) describe three major changes in twentieth-century music; (2) identify atonality, polyrhythm, and electronic sound by ear; (3) express a reasoned opinion about an unfamiliar piece.

Lesson Discussion

The twentieth century broke the rules on purpose. Learners listen to three short excerpts that challenge expectation — one atonal, one polyrhythmic, one electronic — and describe what they hear before any labels are given. We discuss why composers wanted to break from tradition and how audiences responded. The lesson ends with a respectful debate: is unfamiliar music difficult, or just unfamiliar?
