Lecture 21

World Music Traditions

Listening beyond the West

World Music Traditions

Learning Objectives

At the end of the lesson, learners will be able to: (1) name three world music traditions and their contexts; (2) identify the role of music in ceremony and community; (3) compare a non-Western tradition with Philippine folk music.

Lesson Discussion

Most of the world's music does not use the staff. Learners explore three traditions — one African, one Indian, one Southeast Asian — through listening and short video, focusing on context rather than notation. We compare what music does in each culture with what it does in Philippine communities. The lesson ends with a discussion about respect: how to listen to music that is not ours without flattening it.
