Lesson Planning for Music Education

From objective to assessment

Lesson Planning for Music Education

Learning Objectives

At the end of the lesson, learners will be able to: (1) write a measurable objective for a music lesson; (2) sequence a 45-minute lesson into opening, development, and closure; (3) align an assessment with the objective.

Lesson Discussion

A lesson plan is a promise about what learners will be able to do. Learners rewrite vague objectives into measurable ones, then build a 45-minute plan around a single musical skill. We check alignment: if the objective is singing in tune, the assessment must involve singing. The lesson ends with peer review of one plan each, using a simple three-question checklist.
