Assessment and Evaluation in Music

Measuring growth, not just grades

Assessment and Evaluation in Music

Learning Objectives

At the end of the lesson, learners will be able to: (1) distinguish assessment for, as, and of learning; (2) design a simple rubric for a performance task; (3) give feedback that names what to improve next.

Lesson Discussion

Assessment is how a teacher listens to their own teaching. Learners examine three types of assessment and design a four-level rubric for a short performance. We practise feedback that is specific and actionable — not 'good job', but 'your diction in the second line needs work'. The lesson ends by assessing a recorded performance together and comparing judgments.
