Arranging for School Ensembles

Writing for the players you have

Arranging for School Ensembles

Learning Objectives

At the end of the lesson, learners will be able to: (1) assess the forces available in a school ensemble; (2) write or adapt a two-part arrangement for those forces; (3) transpose a part for a transposing instrument.

Lesson Discussion

School arranging starts with the players you actually have, not the ones you wish you had. Learners list their ensemble's instruments and ranges, then adapt a simple melody into two parts that fit. We practise transposing a part for a B-flat instrument and check the result at the keyboard. The lesson ends with a play-through of one arrangement and a short revision.
